Hey, great read as always, I'm super intrested in the idea of saving being an identity rather than a restriction, but could you elaborate a bit more on how someone cultivates that 'saver' identity if it doesn't come naturally?

For me, I didn’t always identify as like a saver or someone who spent consciously, but after a while being tired of the way I spent . Such me always being broke or not having the money to do the things I want to do. I decided to start taking time before I spend money on things to like think about it be like . “OK do I really wanna spend money on this” “let me think about this before I actually buy it” I think about what I could possibly instead of this thing if I still want the thing I’ll get the thing and also I try to romanticize it like we go on Pinterest look at chic. They don’t have frugal chic but they have chic. I tried to imagine myself like as a person. if I go shopping like thrifting I’ll buy more like classy clothes or that can last me a long time I’ll listen to music that makes me feel that way. I’ll listen to podcast and I’ll romanticize. Such as “I’m so sexy so . I’m so smart with my money and that’s such an attractive trait “but that’s the way I do it.

I loved the perspective of, would I stay extra at work in order to pay for something I want. I’m definitely remembering that! Thank you!

Hi Mia, this was so interesting! Can I ask if you had any tips for someone with ADHD who is stuck in the spend/reward/impulsivity cycle, please? Thank you!

Dear Mia (FRUGAL CHIC!),

thank you for your Substack and your consistent posts! They make a huge difference for your readers, I am sure of that. Until now I was someone identifying as "bad as math" and "detached about money", even evilising it. When another woman, like me, read your Stack, it feel POSSIBLE and easy and almost fun and for that I say a big THANK YOU! For the time you take to share your thoughts and conclusions. Excited about all of FRUGAL CHIC and sending you my best regards.

I love this, Mia. Identity shifts are powerful — James Clear talks about it in Atomic Habits. When you see yourself as a saver, you may not save as much as you want every month, but you’ll keep saving. Then you let compounding do its work, and that’s when things start to feel exciting.

So many great strategies here, Mia. Matching my spending to my values has been a big one for me - spending money on Ubers feels like a waste to me, but coffee is another story! Love the concept of frugal, but make it chic too!
