Even though I’m not in your target demographic, I’m happy I discovered your Substack last fall.
I’m in my 60s and in the exciting (and nerve-wracking) throes of creating a third career for myself. After a ten-year career in design (in my 20s), I recently walked away from a 30-year freelance career in film & television (30s–60s) to create an independent press and focus my energies on writing and publishing. I moved to Portugal in order to live debt-free, my gift to myself at this age.
What I want to point out to you is how great your advice is for any and every age, not just those navigating the world in their twenties.
I love how you reframed wellness as a financial decision, not just a lifestyle trend. The connection between emotional regulation and money choices is powerful. For my teen audience, this is a reminder: learn yourself before you try to grow your income.
What would be one self-awareness habit you’d recommend someone start at 18?
Asking yourself hard questions is such a great tool to see if your output is actually aligning with your overarching goals. It's amazing how a change in your typical environment and speaking to someone new can open up different parts of your mind and help your reach greater heights.
Terrific post, Mia, thank you.
